Steven Spielberg Movie Could Be Rebooted Without Disclosure Day Director’s Approval
A classic 1980s Steven Spielberg hit could be remade without his permission. Spielberg opened up about the trade secrets behind his classics while promoting Disclosure Day.
What Steven Spielberg movie could get remade without Spielberg’s approval?
In a new interview with Josh Horowitz, the director revealed that if Universal Pictures wanted to, the studio could reboot E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial without his approval. However, there are no plans for this to happen, as Universal seems to respect Spielberg’s wishes.
Spielberg told Horowitz, “I’m in control of Indiana Jones with George Lucas, and I’m certainly in control of reboots of everything post-E.T. But not E.T, because I didn’t have the clout. If Universal wanted to, they could go ahead and make ET without me.”
“It shows a lot of respect that they’re not doing that, but they could if they wanted to,” the director added.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was released in 1982 and is considered one of Spielberg’s best movies about aliens. The coming-of-age sci-fi adventure remains Spielberg’s highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed nearly $800 million at the box office. Its success prompted the studio to push for a sequel, which Spielberg fought against. The filmmaker did briefly toy with the idea before insisting he doesn’t want to see any continuation of the property. E.T. received nine Academy Award nominations and won four.

Spielberg also recently revealed that one franchise with endless sequels he would like to tackle is James Bond. However, the filmmaker has been turned down on the idea numerous times. His latest film, Disclosure Day, has opened to rave reviews and has already started making a dent at the box office, though it may struggle to break even.
Disclosure Day is out now in theaters.
