Keanu Reeves’ Forgotten Cyberpunk Movie Is Leaving Netflix Soon

One of Keanu Reeves‘ most overlooked films is preparing to leave Netflix. Johnny Mnemonic, the actor’s cyberpunk thriller, will be soon removed from streaming. While the movie struggled with critics upon release, it has developed a cult following over the years among cyberpunk fans. Subscribers now have limited time to watch the film before it exits the streaming service.

Johnny Mnemonic’s Netflix removal date revealed

Netflix subscribers have limited time left to watch Johnny Mnemonic, the 1995 science-fiction thriller starring Keanu Reeves. The cyberpunk film is scheduled to be removed from the service on July 1, 2026, according to What’s on Netflix.

Directed by Robert Longo from a screenplay by William Gibson, Johnny Mnemonic was released in theaters on May 26, 1995. The film is based on Gibson’s 1981 short story of the same name and is set in a dystopian version of 2021, where much of the world’s population suffers from a neurological condition known as Nerve Attenuation Syndrome (NAS).

Reeves stars as Johnny, a data courier who transports digital information through a memory implant in his brain. After accepting a massive data upload from Beijing destined for Newark, Johnny discovers that the files exceed his storage capacity and will kill him unless they are removed within 48 hours. At the same time, he becomes the target of Pharmakom Industries and Yakuza operatives who want the information returned.

As Johnny attempts to stay alive, he joins forces with bodyguard Jane and members of the Low-Tech resistance led by J-Bone. The group believes the encrypted data hidden in Johnny’s implant contains information that could unlock a treatment for NAS.

The cast also includes Dina Meyer as Jane, Takeshi Kitano as Takahashi, Ice-T as J-Bone, Dolph Lundgren as Karl Honig, and Udo Kier as Ralfi. The film received largely negative reviews upon release. It currently holds a 19 percent critics score and a 32 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
