Masters of the Universe Has 1 Big Problem That Nostalgia Can’t Fix

Amazon MGM Studios is attempting to relaunch the Masters of the Universe franchise to mass audiences this summer. Unfortunately, the movie faces several challenges, including one big problem that nostalgia can’t fix.

Masters of the Universe is based on Mattel’s media franchise from the early 1980s. The franchise spawned action figures, comics, animated television series, and a 1987 live-action movie starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man.

Amazon is hoping that nostalgia will win over audiences in Travis Knight’s Masters of the Universe, which stars Nicholas Galitzine as Adam Glenn/He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, and Jared Leto as Keldor/Skeletor.

The early reviews have been surprisingly positive, with ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim calling it a “perfect summer blockbuster” in his 9/10 review. Additionally, the movie has a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Unfortunately, critical reception does not always drive audience interest. More importantly for a blockbuster of this magnitude, positive word of mouth does not guarantee success at the box office. Masters of the Universe faces an uphill climb, stemming from a general problem that many reboots and reimaginings face.

Masters of the Universe’s legacy is its strength and weakness

Masters of the Universe is a love letter to the beloved media franchise of the 1980s. However, I ask: Who is this movie for? Is 2026’s Masters of the Universe being made for kids, or is it catered toward the adults who grew up with the toys and animated series?

Considering today’s kids have little to no connection to He-Man, Masters of the Universe is geared toward adults and filled with nostalgia. That’s a problem, especially for a movie that carries an estimated production budget between $170 million and $200 million. The box office projections for the opening weekend suggest that Masters of the Universe is in danger of flopping. An opening weekend of $25 million to $30 million in North America is not a promising sign for the franchise’s future.

Nostalgia from the 1980s and 1990s has been unsuccessful recently. 2025’s The Running Man and 2024’s The Crow — two reboots of movies from over 30 years ago — flopped at the box office and failed to attract a new, younger audience. Masters of the Universe is trending, continuing the failed streak of rebooting properties from decades ago.

Younger audiences have shown they want to go to the movies. Look at the recent successes of Backrooms and Obsession examples. Are they willing to spend money on a movie about He-Man, a character created before they were born? It doesn’t look like it.

Nostalgia might attract the Masters of the Universe diehards to theaters, but without a connection to younger audiences, this movie does not have the power.

Masters of the Universe opens on June 5, 2026.
