Madelaine Petsch’s Divisive Horror Movie Hits Peacock Today
Lionsgate’s 2024 divisive horror movie, led by Riverdale vet Madelaine Petsch, has finally found a new streaming home. Starting today, The Strangers: Chapter 1 is officially available to stream on Peacock.
What do we know about Madelaine Petsch’s The Strangers: Chapter 1 movie?
The Strangers: Chapter 1 was the first installment in director Renny Harlin’s standalone horror trilogy, which revived the popular horror franchise. In the 2024 film, Petsch played the role of Maya, who suddenly becomes the target for three masked individuals who want to kill without any motive. During its theatrical run, it grossed over $48 million at the box office against its budget of around $8.5 million. The movie currently has an approval rating of 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, while its Popcornmeter score is higher at 45%.
“After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple is forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive in The Strangers: Chapter 1, the chilling first entry of Lionsgate’s horror feature film series,” reads the official synopsis.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 cast also included Froy Gutierrez (Hocus Pocus 2), Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent), Ema Horvath (What Lies Below), and Richard Brake (Barbarian). The movie was directed by Harlin, with Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland writing the screenplay. It was based on a story by original franchise creator Bryan Bertino. The film was produced by Courtney Solomon, Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Alastair Burlingham, and Charlie Dombek.
Besides the 2024 movie, Petsch was also the lead for the trilogy’s 2025 and 2026 sequels. During an interview with ComingSoon, Petsch opened up about the challenging role preparation she did for filming three movies simultaneously.
“I think I did initially go crazy trying to do it. I took a copious amount of notes, and I was lucky enough to be rewriting the films as we shot,” she shared. “So I think I was so woven within the fabric of the story by the time it came to shooting that I was able to remove any worry. But honestly, I have my bible book from when I was shooting of every single note, every single page, and basically, I went through before I shot and would write, ‘Scene 91,’ and then I write on the page, ‘Before in scene 90 you did this, and this was what happened.’ And so I would be able to do a little crash course in what just happened at any given moment that really helped.”
