Marvel Just Confirmed a Huge Mutant’s Death After Gambit

A new X-Men ’97 reveal appears to confirm another major mutant death after the Genosha tragedy. The animated revival already made fans emotional with Gambit’s death in Season 1.

Now, fresh footage and hidden details from Season 2 suggest a different character will not survive either. The update has sparked heavy discussion online because many viewers expected the character to finally get a larger role in the series.

The biggest clue came from the first trailer for X-Men ’97 Season 2. One brief shot showed Colossus kneeling beside a blonde figure in the destroyed remains of Genosha. Fans initially debated who it was, but another scene later in the trailer made things much clearer. A memorial dedicated to fallen mutants prominently featured Magik, strongly hinting that Illyana Rasputina died during the Sentinel massacre.

Magik only recently made her live-action debut in 2020’s The New Mutants, where she was portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy. Even though that movie exists outside the continuity of X-Men ’97, the timing still surprised fans. The character never became a central figure in X-Men: The Animated Series, but comic readers know how important she is to mutant lore and especially to Colossus (via ScreenRant).

Season 2 is also expected to lean heavily into time travel. Characters like Cable, Bishop, and Apocalypse are all part of the upcoming story, which means Marvel could still twist expectations. Some fans believe Magik may die in an alternate timeline rather than during the original Genosha attack. Others think the show could revisit the massacre from a different perspective.

Her death could dramatically reshape Colossus going forward. In earlier animated stories, he stayed away from the X-Men largely because he wanted to protect his younger sister. Without her, Season 2 may push him toward revenge against Bastion or fully pull him back into the team’s fight. Either way, the emotional fallout looks set to become one of the season’s biggest storylines.
