Why The Mandalorian & Grogu Might Not Break Even at the Box Office

Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu is showing some worrying signs that it might struggle at the box office since its release on May 22. Much has already been said about this spinoff having the lowest opening for a Star Wars film, earning only $82 million over its three-day domestic weekend compared to Solo: A Star Wars Story’s $84 million. That 2018 film was a massive box office bomb, amassing only $392 million on a $275 million budget, so many are rightly concerned that this new entry in the Star Wars franchise could meet the same fate. Disney’s The Mandalorian & Grogu is teetering on the edge of whether it will become a box office success.

The Mandalorian & Grogu has a tough hill to climb to be profitable

As of May 28, Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu has earned $167 million worldwide, with $104 million coming domestically and $63 million coming internationally, according to Box Office Mojo. While these numbers are among the highest openers this year, the family-friendly action flick faces several obstacles that could slow its momentum through its theatrical run over the next two months.

As we have reported before, one of the strengths for The Mandalorian & Grogu is its lower budget of $165 million, which comes after the film earned millions in tax credits for primarily filming in California. The typical blockbuster needs to make 2.5 times its production budget to break even at the box office, which would mean that it would have to make $412 million to turn a profit, which wouldn’t be difficult for the movie to achieve. However, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that this threshold is actually higher, noting that “those close to Disney’s decision-making confirm the Jon Favreau film needs to make $500 to $600 million globally to land in the black.” This range, particularly the upper $600 million mark, is a much harder target to hit amid a highly competitive season this summer.

On the more positive side, the $81 million domestic opener for this Star Wars spinoff closely matches the $80 million domestic opener for Project Hail Mary, another family-friendly adventure in space featuring a human-and-adorable-sidekick duo. That film led by Ryan Gosling has earned more than $676 million worldwide, so given the brand recognition of Star Wars and the star power of Pedro Pascal, The Mandalorian & Grogu would seem to have little trouble matching that number. While the movie has received a mixed 62% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes (our review scored it even lower), audiences have had far more favorable reactions to the film, giving it a high 88% rating. Along with a solid CinemaScore, it should receive strong word of mouth that will draw casual moviegoers.

The main trouble, though, is that the international numbers for The Mandalorian & Grogu are relatively low. The worldwide haul for Project Hail Mary was effectively split down the middle between its domestic and international totals. By comparison, The Mandalorian & Grogu’s international haul is less than 40% of its global total, suggesting that it may not have as much traction overseas. Various box office predictions believe the film will decline sharply on the domestic front in its second week, with BoxOffice Pro projecting that it will only earn $30 million to $35 million, which is surprisingly less than its prediction for A24’s Backrooms this weekend.

The competition for The Mandalorian & Grogu will only get stiffer in June when it faces off against other summer blockbusters, notably Masters of the Universe (June 5), Scary Movie (June 5), Disclosure Day (June 12), Toy Story 5 (June 19), and Supergirl (June 26). This onslaught of high-profile films will likely split audiences who will have plenty of options at the cinema.
