What do we know about John Cho & Havana Rose Liu’s Afraid movie?
Afraid was written and directed by Chris Weitz. Cho, a Star Trek alum, portrayed the role of Curtis Pike, who was pressured by his boss into testing a new advanced AI family assistant. As for Liu, she played a tech firm employee named Melody, while also providing the voice for the digital assistant. The movie also starred Katherine Waterston as Meredith, Keith Carradine as Marcus, David Dastmalchian as Lightning, Lukita Maxwell as Iris, Riki Lindhome as Maud, and more.
“In the film, Curtis and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all,” reads the official synopsis. “She learns the family’s behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing — and no one — gets in her family’s way.”
Afraid was executive-produced by Dan Balgoyen, Paul O. Davis, Britta Rowings, and Beatriz Sequeira. Producers were Jason Blum, Andrew Miano, and Weitz. During its theatrical run in 2024, the film received negative reviews from critics and audiences. It currently holds an approval rating of 25% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 57 reviews.
