Backrooms Gets Strong Reviews & RT Score, How It Compares to 2026 Horror Movies

Early reviews for Backrooms tease another strong box-office contender among this year’s horror movie releases. This comes ahead of the A24 horror movie’s upcoming theatrical release this Friday, May 29.

How does Backrooms’ RT score compare to 2026 horror movies?

So far, Backrooms has already garnered an 84% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 58 reviews. Most critics are calling the new A24 horror movie a strong and ambitious directorial debut for up-and-coming filmmaker Kane Parsons. They commend Parsons for delivering a captivating and terrifying original horror story through clever filmmaking. Besides Parsons, lead stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve are also receiving praise for their respective performances.

Among this year’s recent horror movies that received wide releases, Backrooms’ RT score puts it in fourth place for the horror film with the best Tomatometer score, ranking above major films like Paramount Pictures’ Scream 7 (30%), André Øvredal’s Passenger (44%), Blumhouse’s The Mummy (47%), and Legendary Pictures’ Faces of Death reboot (67%). Remaining on top of the list is Focus Features’ blockbuster hit Obsession (94%). Just like Parsons, Obsession was also directed by another YouTuber-turned-filmmaker, Curry Baker. After Obsession, Neon’s mystery thriller film Exit 8 (93%) and 20th Century Studios’ Rachel McAdams movie Send Help (92%) take the second and third spots, respectively.

Backrooms is based on Parsons’ anthology web series, which has already garnered nearly 100 million combined views on YouTube. The movie also stars Mark Duplass (The Morning Show), Finn Bennett (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Lukita Maxwell (Shrinking), Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap), Chelah Horsdal (Hell on Wheels), Toby Hargrave (Superman & Lois), and more. Parsons directed the film from a screenplay written by Will Soodik. The Conjuring creator James Wan is also producing alongside Stranger Things producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen.
