In the first installment of Costner’s Horizon franchise, he portrayed a lone-wolf cowboy named Hayes Ellison. The Academy Award winner is no stranger to the Western genre, after previously starring in 1985’s Silverado, 1990’s Dances with Wolves, 1994’s Wyatt Earp, and 2003’s Open Range.
The 2024 movie also starred Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Abbey Lee, Will Patton, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Jeff Fahey, Isabelle Fuhrman, Ella Hunt, David O’Hara, Scott Haze, Tom Payne, Jaime Campbell Bower, Michael Anganaro, and more. Following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the film received mixed reviews from critics and the audience. It currently has a 51% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of Costner’s lowest-rated Western movies.
“In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat, and tears of many,” reads the synopsis. “Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends, and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.”
