The Mandalorian and Grogu CinemaScore & RT Show Fans & Critics Are Divided

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is sparking a major split between the people who review movies and the people who watch them. The film’s opening weekend scores reveal a striking gap between critical reception and audience approval.

Fans and critics are divided over The Mandalorian and Grogu

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu opened to an $82 million domestic weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The Jon Favreau-directed film has now grossed $165 million worldwide since its May 22 release. However, critics and audiences appear sharply split on the latest Star Wars entry.

CinemaScore data shows opening-night audiences gave the film an A- grade. Rotten Tomatoes reports a Popcornmeter audience score of 89% from over 5,000 verified ratings. These numbers suggest general moviegoers and Star Wars fans are embracing the film.

Critics, however, tell a different story on Rotten Tomatoes. The Tomatometer sits at 62% from 235 reviews, with an average rating of 5.9 out of 10. Metacritic assigns the film a 53 out of 100, indicating “mixed or average” reviews. The site’s critics consensus reads, “Bountiful in action but threadbare in narrative thrust with its episodic structure, this Star Wars is more of a skirmish that coasts on the charm of its central dynamic duo.”

Some critics praised the film’s entertainment value despite its flaws. Erik Kain of Forbes called the film “an absolute blast.” Jeremy Harris of 411mania gave it a 7.5 out of 10. He noted, “Jon Favreau still crafts a fun, engaging, immersive, imaginative, and well-made adventure.”

Other reviewers were far less enthusiastic about the theatrical outing. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter said it “feels stubbornly small in its relatively inconsequential storyline and themes.” Germain Lussier of Gizmodo wrote that the film “doesn’t tell a vital story that pushes the characters or series into new territory.” Tom Jorgensen of IGN added that it seems “laser-focused on catering to people who have only heard about the show.”

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is now playing in theaters worldwide.
