Alfred Molina recently discussed the future of Doc Ock in a new interview with Variety. The actor addressed questions about both the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day and a potential return to the role.
When asked about the new Spider-Man film arriving this summer, Molina expressed enthusiasm but limited knowledge. “I love those movies. I honestly don’t know too much about the new one. I’m not even sure who the villain is,” he said. The actor previously played Doctor Octopus in 2004’s Spider-Man 2 under director Sam Raimi. He then reprised the role 17 years later in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.
Molina also reflected on whether Doc Ock could appear again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He recalled that Marvel originally signed him to a three-movie option for the role. After his character died in Spider-Man 2, he assumed the contract was finished. However, then-Marvel head Avi Arad told him, “Well, no one really dies in this universe.”
The actor then described his reaction when Marvel eventually called him back for No Way Home. He told producer Amy Pascal about his concerns regarding aging into the role again. “I’ve got crow’s feet. I’ve got a double chin. I’m not a youngster anymore,” he recalled saying. Director Jon Watts reassured him that technology could address those changes.
Molina remains open to another return but tempers his expectations about the likelihood. “I think we might have to just leave Doc Ock in a nice prominent place in the rogue’s gallery of villains,” he said. He then added, “If they came knocking on my door and said we’d love you to do it again, I would do it again, no doubt. I doubt if it’ll happen, though.”
The actor currently stars in Netflix’s new series The Boroughs, which premiered on May 21.
