Zendaya talks about Tom Holland’s performance in The Odyssey

Zendaya opened up about watching Tom Holland perform on the set of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in a new ELLE profile. The actress revealed she did not share any scenes with Holland in the epic film. That separation gave her a unique opportunity to observe her partner at work.

“I could have cried, I was so proud,” Zendaya said about watching Holland act on set. The couple first met while working on Spider-Man: Homecoming several years ago. They have since built both a personal and professional relationship across multiple projects. Holland and Zendaya star alongside Matt Damon in the film.

Nolan also praised Zendaya’s work ethic during the demanding production. The director recalled challenging filming conditions that tested the entire cast and crew. He highlighted how Zendaya handled the pressure of juggling multiple projects simultaneously.

“We would be in the maddest, craziest situations, just all of us fighting the elements,” Nolan said. He added that Zendaya would “parachute in from her other job with this sense of true grace and poise.” Nolan said he sought her out for the role because of that “iconic” grace. He noted the challenge of casting the part, saying she was “literally playing a goddess.”

Damon shared his own perspective on Zendaya’s impact during filming. He revealed that Nolan gave Zendaya a rare “perfect” after one particular take. Damon said he and Holland became “obsessed” with the moment. He explained that Nolan typically offers only a brief “good” or “yep” after takes.

“I’ve never even gotten a ‘great.’ She got a ‘perfect’?” Damon recalled. He said he and Holland jokingly complained about it for the rest of the shoot. The movie opens in theaters on July 17.
