1 of the Best Action Movies Ever Made Is Coming To Hulu

Hulu is adding one of the best action movies ever made to its library next month. It is an Indonesian martial-arts thriller that follows an elite SWAT team as they become trapped in an apartment building run by a ruthless drug lord. As the team make their way out, the film showcases intense, visceral martial-arts combat scenes never before put on screen.

The Raid to stream on Hulu next month

The Raid, also known as The Raid: Redemption, will become available to stream on Hulu from Monday, June 1, 2026, per the streamer’s schedule.

Gareth Evans, a Welsh filmmaker, wrote and directed the film. He got the idea for the film while shooting a documentary in Indonesia about Pencak Silat, a traditional martial art form popular in the country. It is also around the same time that he met Iko Uwais, who was practicing Silat while working as a delivery driver.

Evans then went on to make his own martial arts film, Merantau, with Uwais as the headliner. Following its success, he tried to make a sequel, but it became too ambitious, and he couldn’t secure funding. So, he pivoted to making The Raid, which is more grounded and condensed (via That Shelf).

The Raid centers on Rama, who joins a 20-man SWAT team to raid an apartment building run by a drug lord named Tama. After discreetly clearing and subduing criminals and addicts on the first five floors, Tama learns of their presence, puts the building on lockdown, and announces a reward for killing on the team. Trapped inside, Rama and the other officers try to fight their way out one floor at a time.

Its cast features Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim, Yayan Ruhian, Ray Sahetapy, Donny Alamsyah, Iang Darmawan, Pierre Gruno, and Tegar Satrya, among others.

The film premiered in the United States on March 23, 2012, and became a huge success. On Rotten Tomatoes, both critics and the audience have rated it 87%. On IMDb, over 230K users have rated it an average score of 7.4. Commercially, The Raid made $9.2 million globally against a reported $1.1 million budget. Moreover, the success also led to a sequel and a graphic novel.
