Lionsgate Boss Says 30% of Michael 2 Is Already Filmed, Gives Plot Details
Lionsgate’s biggest box office hit is already getting a sequel, and the studio’s film chief is brimming with confidence. The first Michael film hasn’t even finished its theatrical run, but plans for Michael 2 are rapidly taking shape behind the scenes.
Adam Fogelson shares update on Michael 2
Lionsgate Studios Motion Picture Chair Adam Fogelson shared an encouraging update on Michael 2, according to Deadline. He said the company is “really excited about the progress we’re making” on the sequel. Fogelson added that conversations with all appropriate parties “continue to go exceptionally well.”
He highlighted the vast amount of untold story remaining from Michael Jackson’s life. “There is a ton of incredibly entertaining Michael Jackson story, and much of the biggest and most popular parts of his music catalog that were not touched upon in the first film,” he said. The sequel can explore events both before and after the original film’s timeline.
Fogelson expressed strong confidence in the project’s global appeal. “We’re very, very confident that we’ve got an incredibly entertaining movie that will appeal once again to a global audience as the pieces come together,” he said. He made the comments during an analyst call following the company’s quarterly earnings.
Antoine Fuqua directed the first Michael film, which stars Jaafar Jackson as his uncle Michael Jackson. The film opened on April 24 and looks poised to become Lionsgate’s first $1 billion global hit. CEO Jon Feltheimer added on the call, “We believe there is a lot more story to tell and a lot more music to share.”
Fogelson also addressed the sequel’s financial outlook during the call. He revealed the studio already has “25% to 30% of a second movie already shot from the prior production activity.” He noted that footage “will be material” but declined to quantify the exact financial benefit. Nia Long and Colman Domingo also star in the original film alongside Jaafar Jackson.
Michael is currently playing in theatres worldwide.
