Masters of the Universe Gets a Surprising Rotten Tomatoes Score Prediction

The upcoming action flick Masters of the Universe has received a shockingly impressive Rotten Tomatoes prediction. As a nostalgic live-action reboot of the He-Man cartoons, this big-budget summer blockbuster has sadly not come in with lofty expectations at the box office and its trailers looked cheesy in a way that fits the popular ’80s animation but could put off more serious critics. The movie has been in production hell for nearly two decades too, going through Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, and Netflix before Amazon MGM Studios rescued it in 2024, so it’s more of a miracle that it’s finally coming out on June 5, regardless of how well it scores in reviews. But initial reactions to the Amazon MGM Studios film from fans and critics off its premiere have been surprisingly positive. Many have praised actor Nicholas Galitzine for his portrayal of He-Man and director Travis Knight for adapting the material in a campy but entertaining way.

Masters of the Universe is fighting for a Certified Fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes

As of May 21, Masters of the Universe is expected to score a 74.7% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on a bet on Kalshi. A film needs to earn a 75% Tomatoscore on the site to earn its coveted “Certified Fresh” rating, so it’s very close of achieving this feat. The full odds for the predicton market can be found below:

  • Above 30 (Rotten Tomatoes rating) – 99%
  • Above 35 – 99%
  • Above 40 – 98%
  • Above 45 – 97%
  • Above 50 – 96%
  • Above 55 – 88%
  • Above 60 – 80%
  • Above 65 – 78%
  • Above 70 – 68%
  • Above 75 – 48%
  • Above 80 – 33%
  • Above 85 – 20%
  • Above 90 – 9%
  • Above 95 – Less than 1%

When the bet started earlier this month on May 8, it was projected that Masters of the Universe would have a mediocre RT score in the mid-60s. It mostly hovered from 63% to 67% for about ten days before the prediction spiked on May 18, climbing to a high of 81% before dropping to its current mid-70s rating. More than $110,000 has been put into the pot so far.

As always, it’s important to take these predictions with a grain of salt, since they can swing wildly. However, we will likely know much more on the movie’s final Rotten Tomatoes score when its review embargo lifts on June 2 at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET, according to @EmbargoLiftsFor on X (formerly Twitter).

If this high RT score holds, it would be higher than the 64% critics rating for Karl Urban’s Mortal Kombat 2 and the 62% critics rating (as of May 21) for Pedro Pascal’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. More than that, it would be a vast improvement over the 21% critics rating for the 1987 Masters of the Universe live-action film with Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. A strong review score will greatly help the film gain traction with positive word-of-mouth and push its box office totals higher after it received some worrying box office forecasts earlier in the month.

Critic Scott Menzel wrote on X that the reboot is “gloriously campy, wildly entertaining, and nonstop fun from beginning to end” and that Knight “delivered exactly what fans of this franchise have been waiting for.” Meanwhile, Andrew J. Salazar said on the platform that the movie was “like a sister film to the first Thor” and that it hones in on “its themes of fragile masculinity and ego” by the second half. Both praised the performance of Nicholas Galitzine, who shared that he had to eat over 5,000 calories and lift weights for over three hours every day to bulk up for his role as the muscle-bound He-Man.
