Glen Powell’s R-Rated Movie How to Make a Killing Sets HBO Max Release Date
Glen Powell’s R-rated film How to Make a Killing is coming to HBO Max later this year. The movie released in theaters earlier this year to mixed reviews earned just over $20 million at the box office.
When is the How to Make a Killing HBO Max release date?
A24 has announced that How to Make a Killing will release on HBO Max on Friday, June 19, 2026, followed by HBO linear debut on June 20 at 8:00 p.m E.T.
“Disowned at birth by his obscenely wealthy family, blue-collar Becket Redfellow (Glen Powell) will stop at nothing to reclaim his inheritance, no matter how many relatives stand in his way,” reads the film’s synopsis.
While the film underperformed at the box office, critics praised Powell’s performance in what is a violent, comedic film with a thread of infused social commentary. Unfortunately, it marks his second box office flop in a row.

Ahead of its HBO Max release, the film is already available on VOD and Digital platforms. At the time of writing, the film holds a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 192 reviews. It should be noted that it’s charting much better with audiences, with a respectable 77% audience rating.
The film is also loosely inspired by the 1949 British movie called Kind Hearts and Coronets, which was itself loosely based on the 1907 novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal.
How to Make a Killing stars Glen Powell, Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace, and Ed Harris. The film is written and directed by John Patton Ford and produced by Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin. It is Ford’s second feature film after 2022’s Emily the Criminal.
