Sigourney Weaver Explains How Avatar, Alien, & Star Wars ‘Couldn’t Be More Different’
Sigourney Weaver, a veteran of two major franchises, namely Alien and Avatar, has now added a third one to the list in the form of Star Wars. However, according to the three-time Academy Award nominee, who will soon appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu, the three pop culture entities have more differences than commonalities, despite all of them belonging to the sci-fi category.
Sigourney Weaver says Avatar, Alien, and Star Wars are not the ‘same genre’
During a recent conversation in London, the 76-year-old actress explained why fans shouldn’t consider Avatar, Alien, and Star Wars to be of the same genre.
“It’s fascinating to me that they’re all considered the same genre,” Sigourney Weaver told GamesRadar+. “They really couldn’t be more different. Alien is a particularly hostile world, a not very nice alien. Avatar, it’s the humans who are the bad guys. And in this, you have the Mandalorian, who is a hero, and this little, absolutely adorable, wise-seeming little person.”
Notably, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu features Weaver as Colonel Ward, a leader of the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers who previously served in the Rebel Alliance. In the ongoing Avatar series, she portrays Dr. Grace Augustine and Kiri. The veteran thespian also led the Alien series in the ’80s as Ellen Ripley, a character who has since become one of the most iconic female protagonists in pop culture history.
Talking about her upcoming role in The Mandalorian and Grogu, Sigourney Weaver noted that she thoroughly enjoyed working on set with “Baby Yoda.” She shared, “I had asked Jon [Favreau] if I could have a scene with Grogu, because that’s the delight of being in this picture, and he was kind enough to make this happen. I’ve done a lot of movies, and I’m just astonished by how evolved he is,” she remarked. “It’s very hard for me to realize that there isn’t a real person inside of him.”
Meanwhile, The Mandalorian and Grogu is on track to hit theaters on May 22, 2026.
