The X-Files: I Want to Believe’s director’s cut to come out on Disney+

According to a recent press release published by Disney, the director’s cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe will be available to stream on Disney+ from June 11 (via Polygon).

Helmed by Chris Carter, the supernatural thriller film revolves around the journey of former FBI detectives Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), who take on a special case. The duo investigates a priest who claims that he experiences psychic visions, including ones about an abducted agent.

Upon its release, The X-Files: I Want to Believe did not generate a strong response at the box office, earning $69 million globally, as per Box Office Mojo. The film was also not a big hit with critics, as shown by its 32% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

During his 2025 appearance on the Fail Better with David Duchovny podcast, director Chris Carter revealed that he had originally intended the X-Files movie to be an R-rated feature. However, Fox’s desire for it to be a PG-13 movie, along with further pressure from censors, forced Carter to heavily alter the film.

“Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended,” the filmmaker noted. “It’s not just doing a director’s cut to do a director’s cut. It’s really kind of bringing to life something that for me was on the page and never got to the screen.”

The director’s cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe premieres on Disney+ on June 11.
