How Avengers: Doomsday Will Reinvent MCU With Doctor Doom & Steve’s Dynamic
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have teased how Avengers: Doomsday will shake things up within the MCU. In a recent interview, the filmmaking duo promised a “complete reinvention” that will not only surprise audiences but also bring a shift to the overarching narrative. The film arrives later this year.
Russo brothers say ‘Avengers: Doomsday is a complete reinvention’ of MCU
The Russos recently sat down for an interview to mark Captain America: Civil War’s 10th anniversary. During the discussion, Anthony Russo said that a lot of work went into crafting the unique dynamic between the film’s central heroes, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, and their differing yet clashing perspectives. He added that even to this day, fans have mixed opinions about who is more “relatable.”
Later, the interviewer pointed out that this dynamic, particularly between their respective actors Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, was “kind of the root” of Avengers: Doomsday’s story, even though Robert Downey Jr. will now be playing a villain in the form of Doctor Doom. He added that the directors haven’t “abandoned the theme” that fuels the relationship.
Anthony Russo agreed, saying, “It’s very much this sort of unresolved aspirations and flaws of both of those characters which continue to unfold.”
Meanwhile, Joe Russo stressed that “closed-ended expressions” and “serialized storytelling” both had a place in the MCU. He added, “What Marvel’s done better than anybody in history is that serialized storytelling, at scale. And Doomsday is a complete reinvention, it’s another swing.”
He continued, “I don’t think the audience is expecting it at all, what happens in the movie, and its tone and its subject matter. But I’m hoping it feels like another profound shift for them in that serialized story.”
Doomsday is scheduled to premiere on December 18, 2026. It will be the first part of the Multiverse Saga’s closing chapter, which will conclude with 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.
In addition to directing, the Russos co-produced the film with Marvel Studios via their production banner, AGBO. Meanwhile, Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron co-wrote the movie’s screenplay.
Aside from Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, the film’s cast includes other returning MCU veterans, like Chris Hemsworth, Sebastian Stan, and Paul Rudd. It also includes more recent additions to the franchise, like Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, and Pedro Pascal.
Moreover, several actors from the 20th Century Fox X-Men films will be playing key roles. They include Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer, and Alan Cumming.
