Star Wars Fans Won’t Like The Mandalorian and Grogu Reviews At All

The Mandalorian and Grogu reviews have emerged ahead of the film’s theatrical premiere, and they point to a largely mixed-to-negative reception. Notably, the film recently premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.

The Mandalorian and Grogu review roundup is highly mixed

Most critics have mixed-to-negative thoughts about The Mandalorian and Grogu. However, some have viewed the feature positively. Accordingly, the movie has had its Rotten Tomatoes score restored to 60%.

ComingSoon‘s Jonathan Sim deemed it “an inoffensive romp that manages to make Star Wars feel unimportant.” Likening it to a “2-hour-12-minute Saturday morning cartoon,” he further stated that it adds nothing new to the franchise aside from “a bit of fun, fleeting entertainment.” He also noted that “nothing [stood out],” saying it’s “a generic, safe Star Wars movie.”

Matt Hudson of What I Watched Tonight gave the film a two-and-a-half out of five stars in his review. Having mixed feelings, he praised the action, humor, and Ludwig Göransson’s score, but criticized the story and tone, adding it “feels rather inconsequential by the time the underwhelming finale hits.”

Meanwhile, FandomWire‘s Joshua Ryan took issue with the writing. He called it “bland, stale, and expository to a painfully exhausting extent.” Ryan even took it a step further, suggesting the movie had “the worst writing in the franchise.”

However, Edward Douglas found The Mandalorian and Grogu entertaining. He wrote on his Substack, The Weekend Warrior, “[Jon] Favreau and [Dave] Filoni fully understood their assignment to make a Star Wars movie that would appeal to its fans, while also quelling any skeptics.”

Zach Pope called the movie the “pulpy sci-fi adventure [he] needed.” He continued, “It throws you right back into a galaxy far far away and reminds you how awesome this universe can be. It may not reinvent Star Wars, but if you’re looking for a fun, crowd-pleasing adventure, this delivers.”

The Mandalorian and Grogu premieres on May 22, 2026. Jon Favreau directed from his, Dave Filoni, and Noah Kloor’s screenplay.
