Robert Downey Jr. Reveals 1 Condition for Sherlock Holmes 3

After years of rumors and stalled updates, Sherlock Holmes 3 is still alive — but Robert Downey Jr. says one person holds the real power over whether the movie finally happens. During a recent public appearance, the Oscar-winner joked that the future of the franchise is not really in his hands, despite being its biggest star.

Robert Downey Jr. unveils who has the ‘last word’ on a potential third Sherlock Holmes movie

Speaking at the 2026 Lincoln Center Spring Gala, Robert Downey Jr. addressed the long-discussed third Sherlock Holmes film while standing beside his wife and producing partner, Susan Downey.

When asked if another movie was finally moving forward, the actor replied to Associated Press, saying, “People are talking about it, but she’s the producer,” while pointing toward Susan. He then added that she would “have the last word” on the project.

Susan Downey leaned into the mystery surrounding the sequel and joked, “It’s the greatest mystery,” which made Robert laugh during the interview. The couple has worked together for years through their production company, Team Downey, which has backed projects including Perry Mason, The Sympathizer, and Play Dirty.

The original Sherlock Holmes movie was released in 2009 and became a major hit for Warner Bros. Guy Ritchie helmed both projects, with Jude Law starring as Dr. Watson alongside Downey’s energetic version of the famous detective. The franchise also featured Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Jared Harris, and Noomi Rapace across the first two entries.

A third film was first announced years ago and even briefly received a 2021 release date before quietly disappearing from Warner Bros.’ schedule (via Deadline). Since then, fans have continued asking for updates, especially after Downey returned to blockbuster filmmaking following his Marvel exit.

Downey remains one of Hollywood’s biggest stars thanks to roles in Iron Man, Avengers: Endgame, Oppenheimer, Tropic Thunder, and Chaplin. His version of Sherlock Holmes also became one of the most popular modern takes on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective.
