One of 2026’s Best Horror Movies Debuts With Strong Box Office
A low-budget horror movie has come up as one of the standout releases of the year 2026, landing in 3rd place at the domestic box office amid stiff competition from major studio tentpoles. The movie’s strong debut comes amid Michael, Devil Wears Prada 2, and many more releases.
Obsession debuts with strong box office amid intense competition
Obsession earned $16 million across 2,615 North American theatres during its opening weekend. Focus Features acquired the R-rated movie for 14 million at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, a number the movie has already surpassed when accounting for international receipts. Obsession’s global total currently sits at $21.1 million, with the overseas market contributing roughly $5 million.
What distinguishes this opening is the depth of audience and critical support behind it. The movie has a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and general viewers. Such alignment between critics and paying customers often suggests sustained box office legs rather than a front-loaded collapse. Demographic data showed men made up 59% of the initial audiences, and 40% of attendees fell between the ages of 25 and 34 (via Box Office Mojo).
The project is the feature directorial debut of Curry Barker, a filmmaker who built a substantial following on YouTube before transitioning to long-form storytelling. The story is about a music store employee named Bear, played by Michael Johnston. “After breaking the mysterious ‘One Wish Willow’ to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price,” the official synopsis states.
Joining Johnston in the Obsession cast are Inde Navarrette, along with Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter in supporting roles. The film was shot on a production budget of approximately $1 million, making its opening weekend box office an indication of it being one of the best horror movies of 2026. Obsession premiered in the Midnight Madness programme at TIFF on September 5, 2025, before its wide theatrical release on May 15, 2026.
