Why The Mandalorian & Grogu Became a Star Wars Movie Instead of Season 4

Star Wars fans finally know why The Mandalorian’s story changed in a major way. Dave Filoni revealed what pushed The Mandalorian and Grogu toward the big screen instead of another season.

Dave Filoni on why The Mandalorian & Grogu was done as a movie

Co-writer and co-producer Dave Filoni explained why Lucasfilm changed The Mandalorian’s future from streaming to theaters in an interview with Variety. He said, “We all felt like it was time.” Filoni added, “Star Wars came to life on the big screen.” He also said, “I think no matter how good a show we made, you’d always feel like we were missing a dimension of it.”

“The characters have really earned their way to me,” Filoni said while discussing Din Djarin and Grogu. He added, “I love that they’re new characters.” Filoni also said, “Fans the world over love these two characters, and it was time to give them their big adventure.” Lucasfilm will release The Mandalorian and Grogu on May 22 after seven years without a Star Wars theatrical movie.

Meanwhile, Jon Favreau told GamesRadar+ that The Mandalorian season 4 originally connected more directly with Ahsoka season 2. He said, “I had written a season 4 that did tie in to what had happened before.”

Favreau also explained, “When you’re telling a season of television as a story, you can operate under the assumption that you have a lot of time to play things out.” However, he said, “When you’re doing a movie, especially when it’s the first movie in seven years, this is a different type of experience.”

Favreau explained why the film became more standalone than the planned television season. He said, “Star Wars is also about bringing new people into the Star Wars community.” Favreau added, “By telling a story that was self-contained, you can drop in in the middle of the story.”

He also compared the movie’s structure to George Lucas beginning of Episode 4 during an ongoing adventure. Ahsoka season 2 is currently scheduled for release in early 2027. Favreau also discussed theatrical storytelling expectations for audiences.

He said, “You have to connect with the throughline for fans who’ve been with it since the beginning.” Favreau added, “You have to make a complete story in those two hours.”

The Mandalorian and Grogu will release in theaters on May 22.
