James Cameron’s advice to young filmmakers
Legendary filmmaker James Cameron, whose credits include Titanic, Avatar, and The Terminator, recently shared what he believes is the most important piece of advice for young filmmakers.
Cameron was asked by @filmmkrs what advice he would give to first-time filmmakers. This was while discussing his new project with Billie Eilish, Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour.
“Okay, so you want to make your first feature film, and I am supposed to drop some wisdom after having done this for 42 years? I’m going to go with the cast is the most important thing,” Cameron said.
“Don’t forget that the most important thing is your cast,” Cameron continued. “Everything you do after that, there’s a lot of latitude, a lot you can screw up. You get it all perfect, and if your cast is wrong, it’s nothing.”
He further added, “Also, be prepared, because resources are going to be limited on your first film. So you have to move with confidence and authority from one setup to the next.”
Cameron also noted that directors should avoid restricting their actors’ movements or making them too rigid. He thinks that it can take away from the cast’s natural flow and performance.
James Cameron has remained one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the industry for decades. He is also currently the second-highest-grossing film director of all time. This is because his films are earning more than $10 billion worldwide.
