New Minecraft 2 Movie Update From Kirsten Dunst Is Best News

A Minecraft Movie star just dropped the first major update on the sequel, and fans are already losing it. Kirsten Dunst confirmed her role as Alex and revealed that production on the Warner Bros. and Legendary follow-up has officially begun.

A Minecraft Sequel starts production

Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast of the untitled Minecraft Movie sequel, Deadline reported exclusively. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary confirmed Dunst will play Alex in the follow-up film. The actress shared a set photo on Instagram showing her chair beside Jack Black’s.

Dunst posted the image with the caption, “It has begun.” The photo confirms production has officially started on the sequel. Her casting was first reported in March after she pitched herself for the role.

Dunst told Town & Country in August 2025 that her children enjoyed A Minecraft Movie. She expressed interest in making a film that would not cost her money. Alex previously appeared in the first film’s post-credits scene, voiced by an uncredited Kate McKinnon.

Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge will all return for the sequel. Jared Hess will direct the film from a script written with Chris Galletta. Producers include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, and Kayleen Walters.

A Minecraft Movie became one of the biggest films of 2025. It opened to a record $163 million domestically, the largest debut for a video game adaptation. The film earned nearly $961 million at the global box office overall.

Warner Bros. will release A Minecraft Sequel in theaters on July 23, 2027. Dunst’s recent credits include Alex Garland’s Civil War and Derek Cianfrance’s The Roofman opposite Channing Tatum. She earned her first Oscar nomination for Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog.

Dunst will also appear alongside Keanu Reeves in Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down.
