Guillermo del Toro To Reunite With Hellboy’s Ron Perlman on Next Netflix Movie
Guillermo del Toro is teaming up again with Hellboy star Ron Perlman for a new feature for Netflix. The two are frequent collaborators. Most recently, they worked together on Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, also a Netflix movie. The 2022 stop-motion film won the Best Animated Feature Film accolade at the 95th Academy Awards.
Guillermo del Toro confirms Ron Perlman’s casting in upcoming Netflix movie
Guillermo del Toro confirmed that Perlman is part of the cast of his upcoming Netflix animated film, The Buried Giant, during a Q&A session in London as del Toro was awarded a Fellowship by the British Film Institute.
“He’s coming on the next movie,” del Toro said about Perlman’s involvement in The Buried Giant (via Deadline). However, he didn’t reveal which role the 76-year-old actor is playing. The director and star have been collaborating for a long time. Perlman was in del Toro’s very first feature, 1992’s Cronos. He subsequently appeared in Blade II, Pacific Rim, and Nightmare Alley. He also portrayed the title character in Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
Del Toro has called The Buried Giant a “fascinatingly difficult stop-motion movie for adults,” adding that the team behind the movie is developing it “without any concession to a family audience.” It will be an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s book of the same name. The filmmaker has penned the script with Dennis Kelly.
Notably, the original fantasy novel revolves around an elderly couple residing in a fictional post-Arthurian England. During the aforementioned conversation, del Toro underscored why it was necessary to use stop-motion to tell this particular story. “If you do a live action Pinocchio and all of a sudden a puppet walks through it becomes uncanny valley, which is a horrible thing that doesn’t belong in the same world,” the Pan’s Labyrinth’s director explained. “Just like if you do a live action movie about an old couple crossing a landscape full of trolls and fairies, and there are special effects and actors.”
Del Toro continued, “I want all the creatures to be of the same material. It’s gonna take us years. And it’s incredibly difficult.”
The Buried Giant doesn’t yet have a release date.
