Why Mortal Kombat 2 Killed Off [Spoiler] So Soon Explained

Hollywood’s latest video game adaptation is already making fans talk after one major character’s demise stunned audiences early in the story. Mortal Kombat II moves much faster than the 2021 movie and wastes little time raising the stakes. Writer Jeremy Slater has now explained why the film made such a bold decision and how it connects to bigger sequel plans ahead.

Why Cole Young dies so soon in Mortal Kombat 2 explained

Jeremy Slater said the creative team wanted the sequel to focus more heavily on classic fighters from the games instead of staying centered on one original character. Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan, served as the audience’s entry point in the 2021 movie, but longtime fans had mixed feelings about him leading the franchise.

Speaking to Variety, Slater admitted he actually pitched killing Cole before he officially got hired to write the movie. He explained that Mortal Kombat works best when different fighters get their own spotlight, similar to players choosing new characters in the games. Slater also praised Tan, calling him a “phenomenal human being” and “world-class martial artist,” while saying the decision was more about the larger direction of the franchise.

The writer compared Cole’s situation to adding a random new hero into an Avengers movie alongside icons like Iron Man and Captain America. According to Slater, many hardcore fans mainly wanted to spend time with established Mortal Kombat characters instead. “The fans have been waiting 30 years to spend time with these characters, and when it’s not one of those characters eating up the screen time, they get resentful,” Slater stated.

That shift opened the door for bigger roles for Johnny Cage, Kitana, Shao Kahn, and Baraka in the sequel. Karl Urban joined the franchise as Johnny Cage, while Adeline Rudolph plays Kitana.

Still, Slater hinted Cole’s story may not be completely finished. He reminded fans that death rarely stays permanent in the Mortal Kombat universe and teased that Lewis Tan could still return in some form later on. The sequel already brings back characters like Kano and Kung Lao after earlier deaths.
