Amazon MGM’s New Revenge Thriller Is 1 of 2026’s Best Movies So Far
Amazon MGM’s upcoming movie Is God Is is set to release this week. Although the movie has flown a bit under the radar, it’s debuted to strong reviews, putting it squarely in the running for one of the best movies of the year.
Is God Is has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a stellar 96% rating ahead of its release. On fellow review aggregator site Metacritic, the site has debuted to an equally strong 86 overall rating, showing the film’s high potential for being one of the best movies of the year.
The movie stars Kara Young, Mallori Johnson, Vivica A. Fox, Sterling K. Brown, Janelle Monáe, and more, and follows the story of twin sisters who are tasked with hunting down their father for revenge after he destroyed their family.
“Is God Is follows twin sisters bound by an unbreakable connection as they fulfill their dying mother’s final command: hunt down the monstrous father who destroyed their family. Their pursuit unfolds as a bold, stylish thriller that weaves biting humor into sinister suspense, where sisterly devotion becomes a deadly weapon and justice demands blood,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
Is God Is has debuted to stellar reviews so far
Reviews for the film are extremely strong so far, especially when touching upon things like its story. TheWrap’s William Bibbiani praised the movie, saying it is “so emotionally, dramatically, philosophically complex that it’s tempting to put on professorial airs and focus entirely on its depth. But it is also, just as importantly, electrifying to watch.”
Boston Globe’s Odie Henderson also praised the film, noting it “has the aura of Greek tragedy and the darkest heart of neo-noir. Its soul is an unapologetic howl of Black female rage represented by the superb lead performances of Kara Young and Mallori Johnson.”
Variety’s Guy Lodge also praised the film, saying it’s “both wildly entertaining and viciously upsetting, this remarkable debut boldly reaps what others have sown.”
Is God Is’ strong reviews are especially worth noticing due to the general lack of marketing and hype around the movie. The upcoming revenge thriller is projected to only bring in $4.5 million in its opening weekend, a small number for a movie that’s getting such massive praise and features such a star-studded cast.
