Mortal Kombat 3 To Bring Back [Spoiler] as a Fire God
Mortal Kombat III is already building major buzz after new comments from writer Jeremy Slater hinted at the return of one of the franchise’s biggest fighters in a powerful new form. The sequel plans are becoming clearer after the success of Mortal Kombat II, and longtime fans of the games finally have a big storyline to look forward to on the big screen.

Liu Kang confirmed to return as a Fire God in Mortal Kombat 3
Jeremy Slater confirmed that Liu Kang’s story is far from over, even after the shocking events of “Mortal Kombat II.” Speaking with Variety, the writer said the team always planned to bring the character back in some form for the third movie. Fans of the video games already know Liu Kang eventually transforms into the powerful Fire God version of himself, and Slater hinted that the storyline is now coming to theaters.
Slater explained that Liu Kang’s fate was designed to surprise hardcore fans. “We always knew that we would be bringing Liu Kang back in some regard in the third movie,” he said. He also revealed the filmmakers intentionally left a mystery around whether the character truly died or “ascended to some other plane.”
The writer also opened up about killing off Cole Young early in Mortal Kombat II. According to Slater, longtime fans wanted the movies to focus more heavily on classic game characters instead of original additions.
He compared the situation to adding Bob into an Avengers movie beside icons like Iron Man and Captain America. Still, he teased that actor Lewis Tan could return because “death is never permanent in the Mortal Kombat universe.”
The franchise itself has had an uneven but passionate fan following for decades. The 1995 Mortal Kombat movie became a cult favorite despite mixed reviews, while later entries struggled critically.
The 2021 reboot gained praise for its brutal fight scenes and game accuracy, even though some viewers disliked the missing tournament storyline. Mortal Kombat II appears to have fixed that issue by fully embracing the tournament format and adding characters like Johnny Cage, Kitana, and Shao Kahn.
