The Boys’ Chace Crawford Lost Major Musical Role but Met Jennifer Lawrence

Chace Crawford revealed that he almost starred in the 2011 Footloose remake but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts with Gossip Girl. However, he recalled meeting a pre-fame Jennifer Lawrence during his screen test, where she read lines opposite him. He described Lawrence as “really good and natural” and said they would even eat lunch together.

Chace Crawford recalls meeting Jennifer Lawrence during Footloose remake audition

During an appearance on Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard, Crawford said he was close to joining the Footloose remake but ultimately had to leave the project because of scheduling conflicts with Gossip Girl. He also admitted he initially told original director Kenny Ortega that he could not sing or dance, though Ortega encouraged him to move forward with the audition process.

Crawford said, “It was an interesting challenge because they were like, ‘No, we’re going to lean into this thing. We’re going to fly you out and do a big screen test.’”

Although he did not end up signing on for the film, Crawford shared a memorable story from the screen test, where he met Jennifer Lawrence before her breakout role in Winter’s Bone.

“What was funny about that day, they had put in this reader to read opposite me, a female actress. And she was really good and natural, and we would eat lunch, and she was cool,” he recalled.

Crawford later revealed that the actress was Lawrence. He also remembered thanking her for reading with him, while Lawrence told him the rehearsal had gone “really good.” He additionally screen-tested with Julianne Hough, who eventually landed the role of Ariel Moore, and praised her dancing ability.

Directed by Craig Brewer, the 2011 musical remake follows Ren McCormack, a teenager who moves to a small town and learns that local authorities have banned dancing and loud music. He then joins forces with a local girl to challenge the town’s strict rules and bring energy back to the community.
