Crystal Lake Release Date Is Ideal for Peacock’s Friday the 13th Prequel

Peacock announced the release date for Crystal Lake, a prequel show to Friday the 13th. The series will depict the events in the life of a young Jason Voorhees before the first Friday the 13th movie.

Linda Cardellini headlines the cast as Pamela Voorhees, the mother of future serial killer Jason Voorhees. Speaking of killers, Callum Vinson will play Jason years before he put on the hockey mask and went on a murdering spree.

Crystal Lake’s cast also stars William Catlett as Levon Brooks, Devin Kessler as Briana Brooks, Dorf as Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace, Nick Cordileone as Ralph, Joy Suprano as Rita, Danielle Kotch as Claudette, and Phoenix Parnevik as Barry.

Crystal Lake will premiere on Peacock on October 15, an advantageous release date for the series.

Why is the Crystal Lake release date a good decision?

The perfect release day for Crystal Lake would have been Friday the 13th. Unfortunately, October 13, 2026 falls on a Tuesday, an unpopular day to release a new streaming show. Most streaming shows are released closer to the weekend, so choosing October 15 — a Thursday — as the release date makes more sense.

In this case, the month is more important than the day for Crystal Lake’s release. Most people associate the Friday the 13th movies with the Halloween season in October. Releasing the heart of the Halloween season, when horror becomes the prominent genre, is a smart decision by Peacock.

When Crystal Lake was initially announced in development at A24 in 2022, Bryan Fuller, known for his work on Hannibal, was set to be the showrunner. In May 2024, Fuller exited the show due to creative differences.

Later that year, Brad Caleb Kane signed on as the new showrunner. Kane is coming off the success as a co-showrunner of It: Welcome to Derry, HBO Max’s TV prequel show to the IT movies. Kane is doing the same thing — taking a movie franchise to television — with Crystal Lake, so Peacock’s hoping his experience on It: Welcome to Derry can lead to the same success.
