Mortal Kombat 2 Box Office Underperforms, Falls Short of Predictions

Mortal Kombat 2 opened with a modest global debut this weekend, falling short of early expectations despite fans’ anticipation and a competitive domestic performance. The sequel faced stiff competition at the box office, particularly from The Devil Wears Prada 2, which continued to lead in several markets.

The film got an estimated $63 million worldwide during its opening weekend, including roughly $40 million domestically and $23 million internationally. Produced on a reported $80 million budget before marketing costs, the sequel in the video game adaptation franchise now faces pressure to sustain momentum in the coming weeks.

Mortal Kombat 2 did well at domestic box office, falls short internationally

The Mortal Kombat 2 box office performance reflected a split between domestic and overseas audiences. In North America, the film posted an estimated $40 million opening, placing it close to The Devil Wears Prada 2 in the weekend rankings (via Box Office Mojo).

Internationally, however, the rollout turned out to be weaker. It was expected to make between $70-80 million worldwide, and has underperformed on that front, making only $23 million in overseas markets. Industry projections now suggest the film could finish its theatrical run near the $130 million mark worldwide. While that may allow the production to recover costs, it remains uncertain whether the performance would justify another sequel.

Domestic audiences responded more positively to the sequel than international viewers. The film currently holds a 65% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% audience rating on the Popcornmeter.

Directed by Simon McQuoid, the sequel brings back several returning cast members from 2021’s Mortal Kombat, including Lewis Tan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jessica McNamee, and Josh Lawson. New additions include Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, alongside Tati Gabrielle and Adeline Rudolph.

The sequel entered a crowded theatrical market, with Michael continuing a strong run in its third weekend, and The Devil Wears Prada 2 is breaking box office records in its second weekend. Joining them are The Sheep Detectives and Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour.
