Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley & Paul Mescal Reunite for an ‘Impossible Love Story’
Oscar winner Jessie Buckley and nominee Paul Mescal will share the screen once again in a Louisiana-set epic from Beasts of the Southern Wild director Benh Zeitlin. The project comes hot on the heels of their pairing in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet.
Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal to star in Hold on to Your Angels
Zeitlin wrote the screenplay and will direct Hold on to Your Angels. Production is scheduled to begin in February 2027. The film is set on the deteriorating coastline of South Louisiana. It “follows a hell-bound outlaw (Mescal) and a ferocious shepherd of lost souls (Buckley) who fall in catastrophic love as their crumbling bayou paradise drags them under.” Producers describe it as a story rooted in both myth and the stark realities of an eroding landscape.
For Zeitlin, the project has been decades in the making. “Hold on to Your Angels is the most impossible love story I’ve ever witnessed. An outlaw romance for the end of America, set on the crumbling edge of South Louisiana,” he said. He traced the film’s origins to a chance encounter 17 years ago, when its real-life inspiration, Pam Harper, auditioned for Beasts of the Southern Wild.
Moreover, Plan B, the company behind Moonlight and 12 Years a Slave, has boarded the project. Alex Coco, a producer on Sean Baker’s Anora, joins under his Rapt Film banner. International sales are being managed by The Veterans, while CAA Media Finance is overseeing domestic rights. The package will be introduced to buyers at the Cannes market this month, where early interest is expected to be intense. Buckley won the Best Actress Academy Award for her performance in Hamnet. Mescal received a Lead Actor Oscar nomination for his breakout role in the 2022 drama Aftersun.
