Andor Lead’s Netflix FIFA Comedy Arrives at the Perfect Time

A new sports comedy starring an Andor actor is set to debut on Netflix next month, just a month before the FIFA World Cup 2026. The film centers on a sports executive’s ambitious plan to outbid other countries and host the FIFA World Cup in 1986.

Mexico 86 arrives on Netflix right before FIFA World Cup 2026

The Spanish-language sports film, Mexico 86, will premiere on Netflix on Friday, June 5, 2026. The streaming giant announced the release date with a trailer last month.

The story centers on a fictional character named Martín De La Torre. He makes an outlandish promise of winning the bid to host the FIFA World Cup in Mexico 1986. The film combines certain real-life events and characters with fictional elements through satire. It showcases how Mexico ended up hosting the historic event.

Gabriel Ripstein directed the film, co-writing the script with Daniel Krauze. Diego Luna leads the film as Martín De La Torre, while also serving as an executive producer. The rest of the cast includes Karla Souza, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Andrés De León, Frank Crudele, and Genevieve Fleming, among others.

“My character is fictional, but many of the things that happened in the film are things we read about, and we know, or that we heard that happened,” the Andor star told Deadline.

The actor also added that the film “fictionalized everything.” However, he was sure to point out that several characters were inspired by real people around at the time. “You have some of the players, [FIFA President] Havelange, and Emilio Azcárraga, the owner of the biggest TV chain in Mexico, which became a key player,” he explained.

With the FIFA World Cup 1986, Mexico became the only country at the time to host the tournament twice. Initially, Colombia was going to host it, but it withdrew, and Mexico stepped in as the replacement. Ultimately, Argentina, led by Diego Maradona, won the cup, marking their second World Cup victory after winning it in 1978.

For the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, Mexico will once again host the event alongside the United States and Canada. It will take place between June 11 and July 19.
