The digital release date of Project Hail Mary has possibly been revealed, indicating when viewers can start watching or rewatching it from the comfort of their homes. Since its premiere around two months ago, the sci-fi feature has broken multiple box office records and currently stands at $640 million worldwide. According to WhentoStream, which sources @robmontoya.bsky.social‘s evidence, Project Hail Mary will reportedly drop on Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) platforms on May 12, 2026. However, its distributor in the United States, Amazon MGM Studios, has not officially confirmed this. Accordingly, the above date is likely tentative or subject to change.
Last month, Ryan Gosling confirmed at CinemaCon, where the film’s box office success was celebrated, that its theatrical window had been extended.
The movie first premiered at Leicester Square in London on March 9. It then arrived in theaters across the U.S. on March 20. It crossed the $600 million mark by the end of last month and has now earned approximately $640 million worldwide.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed from Drew Goddard’s screenplay, which adapts Andy Weir‘s 2021 novel. The story follows Dr. Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher and scientist who awakens on a spaceship with amnesia.
While recovering his memory, he learns that he was sent on a mission to prevent Earth’s global cooling by investigating and stopping a microorganism that is dimming the sun. He later encounters and befriends a rock-shaped alien, whom he names Rocky. The pair soon joins forces after realizing they are on similar missions.
In addition to Gosling, the movie features Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce in supporting roles. Additional cast members include Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung, Priya Kansara, Malachi Kirby, and Liz Kingsman.
The film has garnered a primarily positive critical reception, as reflected in its scores on review aggregators. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a “certified fresh” approval rating of 94%. Meanwhile, Metacritic has assigned it a “generally favorable” Metascore of 77, based on 60 critic reviews.
