James Gunn Shares Photo With Scooby-Doo Star After Man of Tomorrow Cast Reveal

Superman director James Gunn isn’t saying much, but a picture really is worth a thousand words. The writer-director has got the DC fandom buzzing by posting a casual photo with Matthew Lillard, just hours after news broke that the actor has joined the cast of Man of Tomorrow.

Deadline reported that Matthew Lillard was the latest addition to the ever-growing Man of Tomorrow cast. DC hasn’t officially commented on the casting, and no specific role was listed for the actor. Gunn, however, didn’t leave fans guessing for long. He posted a photo with Lillard on Instagram a couple of hours later, captioning it, “Just casually hanging out with my longtime friend @matthewlillard for no reason.”

This is about as close to confirmation as fans have gotten until James Gunn makes an official announcement via proper channels or, the recent usual, Threads. For now, it is not known who Lillard will play. Gunn consistently makes unexpected choices for Man of Tomorrow and the broader DC Universe, so speculation is already running wild.

However, the casting also means a reunion, as Gunn and Lillard go back more than two decades to 2002’s Scooby-Doo and its 2004 sequel, where the latter brought Shaggy to life, and the former wrote the screenplays.

Lillard made his interest in joining the DCU public last year at the Los Angeles Comic-Con. “I have wanted to be in a superhero world,” he told the audience. “I’ve wanted to be in [the DCU], if anyone’s curious. If you run into James Gunn, tell him I’m available. I keep waiting for that invitation. I don’t know if it’s lost in the mail,” he added (via Variety).

Matthew Lillard joins David Corenswet, who returns as the Man of Steel. The stacked call sheet also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and more. Man of Tomorrow is currently in production and will be released on July 9, 2027.
