What legendary horror movie is getting a 4K restoration with new footage?
Clockwork has now announced that it will be releasing Ken Russell’s The Devils in 4K.
A press release reads, “Ken Russell’s The Devils is the definitive cut of The Devils, and no other director’s cut formally exists. This cut was originally reconstructed in 2004 under the supervision of Ken Russell and the film’s editor Michael Bradsell with the collaboration of Mark Kermode and Paul Joyce. The 4K restoration was completed using the original camera negative at WB Water Tower Color, with audio restoration completed using original composite 35mm mag film at WB Sound. Warner Bros. Clockwork’s release of Ken Russell’s The Devils marks the first time Russell’s defining masterpiece will officially be made accessible to the public.”
The 4K restoration of Ken Russell’s The Devils will first be unveiled at the 79th Cannes Film Festival (taking place May 12 to May 23) as an official selection in Cannes Classics. It will then be released in North American theaters for an exclusive one-week engagement on October 16, 2026.
“In 17th-century France, Father Grandier (Oliver Reed) is a priest whose unorthodox views on sex and religion influence a passionate following of nuns, including the sexually obsessed Sister Jeanne (Vanessa Redgrave),” a description of the movie’s plot reads. “When the power-hungry Cardinal Richelieu (Christopher Logue) realizes he must eliminate Grandier to gain control of France, Richelieu portrays Grandier as a satanist and spearheads a public outcry to destroy the once-loved priest’s reputation.”
