Tom Cruise’s $1.5B Hit Soars Back Into Top Spot on Streaming

A Tom Cruise box office hit has reclaimed the top spot on streaming charts, dethroning a horror film. It originally premiered in theaters three years ago. Following its release, it garnered widespread positive reception.

Top Gun: Maverick reclaims #1 spot on Paramount+

Top Gun: Maverick, headlined by Tom Cruise, is now once again the #1 movie on Paramount+ as of May 5, 2026, as per FlixPatrol. It recently retook the position from Primate, now sitting at #4, after losing it to the latter last week. Notably, this development comes ahead of the film and its predecessor’s planned re-release in theaters for a week, beginning May 13.

Maverick first premiered at CinemaCon on April 28, 2022, before releasing theatrically across the United States on May 27. A threequel, announced last month, is currently in development.

Joseph Kosinski, known for Tron: Legacy and Oblivion, the latter of which also features Cruise, directed. Meanwhile, Christopher McQuarrie, who worked with the Hollywood veteran on four Mission: Impossible films, Ehren Kruger, and Eric Warren Singer co-wrote the script.

Cruise reprises his role of Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell from the original, released in 1986, alongside the late Val Kilmer, who makes a special appearance as Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. The rest of the supporting cast includes franchise newcomers like Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Bashir Salahuddin, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, and Danny Ramirez.

The story takes place roughly 30 years after the first film’s events. Maverick gets assigned to a Top Gun school at NAS North Island, where he trains a group of young graduates. This includes Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of his late best friend and former RIO, Nick a.k.a. Goose.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Top Gun: Maverick holds an impressive approval rating of 96% “certified fresh” and a slightly greater audience score of 99% “verified hot.” Both are superior to the first one’s ratings, which are a 56% rotten and a robust 83% audience score.
