Andy Serkis reveals his upcoming film The Hunt for Gollum will blend classic and modern filmmaking techniques. The director told Den of Geek that the original crew members are returning to the production. He confirmed that set designers from Peter Jackson’s trilogy have rejoined the project.

Serkis emphasized the film’s commitment to practical effects over purely digital methods. He stated the production is “using miniatures” and “employing some of the older techniques.” The team is also “bringing some of the new techniques to bear as well.”

The filmmaker explained that The Hunt for Gollum occupies a unique space within the franchise. Serkis said the film “sits between the world of the Hobbit trilogy and the original trilogy.” He added that “technically, visually, and stylistically, it wants to merge those two” trilogies into one cohesive vision.

Serkis confirmed the production is “using more prosthetics for the orcs” and “shooting all on location.” He acknowledged the challenge of honoring the beloved franchise while telling a fresh story. Serkis described the process as “walking the tightrope of creating a world that people are familiar with.”

The director also clarified that the film will not rely solely on audience nostalgia. Serkis said he is “very excited, and not just it being a nostalgia trip.” He added that “there’s actually a lot to explore with the character of Gollum.” Serkis also addressed Jamie Dornan’s casting as a younger Aragorn, credited as “Strider.” He explained the character “wouldn’t think of himself as Aragorn” at this point in the story.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.
