Christopher Nolan discusses why he cast Matt Damon as Odysseus
Christopher Nolan revealed he cast Matt Damon as Odysseus because he greatly admired the latter’s acting abilities.
On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host asked the Academy Award-winning director why he took a risk on Damon while casting The Odyssey’s lead. The latter replied that Damon “is one of the greats.”
Nolan highlighted their previous collaborations, Interstellar and Oppenheimer. He said, “I got that thrill of being able to call him up and say, ‘How about Odysseus?'” He added that this was a “one-word pitch,” further stating, “It’s right there.”
The filmmaker recalled warning Damon that work on The Odyssey would be “very hard.” He said of the actor’s response, “Yeah, I know. I know.” Nolan remembered further clarifying to him that the work would be really difficult.
Stephen Colbert then brought up Damon’s comment about how The Odyssey was the “hardest movie” he ever made. Nolan concurred, replying that making it was “incredibly challenging” for him and the crew in “all the right ways.” He added that the work was daunting and that it had to be, noting how the source material is “the greatest epic in literature.”
“We did want to get out there and really try and do a lot of these things for real,” he elaborated. “Really get out there on the seas, climb the mountains, go in the caves, all of that.”
The Odyssey premieres in theaters on July 17, 2026. In addition to directing, Nolan wrote the screenplay. He also co-produced with his wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas, via their production banner SynCopy.
Apart from Damon, the film stars Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron, among others.
