Christopher Nolan on if He’ll Make a Biblical Movie After The Odyssey
Switching gears a bit, Christopher Nolan is fully diving into The Odyssey, but his latest interview has fans guessing about what’s next. During a conversation with Stephen Colbert, he was asked about possibly making a Bible-based movie, and his reply wasn’t exactly clear-cut.
Christopher Nolan answers Stephen Colbert if he’ll ever make a movie based on the Bible
The question came up casually during Nolan’s appearance on The Late Show. Colbert asked if he would ever consider adapting a biblical story like that of Samson. Nolan didn’t give a clear yes or no. Instead, he leaned into the scope of his current film, The Odyssey.
“I think, let’s see how this goes,” Nolan said, pointing toward The Odyssey as a massive undertaking on its own. He added that the film already deals with larger-than-life elements, saying, “We’re trying to put all the elements… all the things we remember about Odyssey.”
Rather than confirm future plans, Nolan shifted focus to the experience he’s building. “What we’re trying to do is take the audience and put them in the world… put them in that mindset,” he explained, calling it “a good non-answer” to the original question. Colbert joked back, “I’m going to take that as a yes.”
While the biblical question remains open-ended, Nolan did share more about The Odyssey itself. The film follows Odysseus’ long journey home after the war, packed with danger, loss, and encounters with powerful forces. It’s a story about survival, family, and resilience, themes that still connect with audiences today.
The project is also a technical milestone. It’s confirmed to be the first movie shot entirely using IMAX cameras, continuing Nolan’s push for large-scale cinematic experiences. The production spans multiple countries, including Italy, Greece, and the U.K., giving it a truly global feel.
Nolan is once again teaming up with his wife and producer Emma Thomas, keeping his core creative circle intact. Even with the pressure of adapting such a well-known story, Nolan aims to deliver a strong, honest take that respects the original while feeling fresh for modern audiences.
