1 Spider-Man Sequel Movie Called ‘Dog—’ by Invincible Creator
The creator of Invincible, Robert Kirkman, recently spoke about the one Spider-Man sequel movie that he strongly dislikes. While he praised certain elements of it in an interview, he deemed it weak overall. Over the years, there have been multiple films centered around the webslinger, each of which has received a different critical reception. Collectively, the films have grossed roughly $11 billion at the box office.
Robert Kirkman criticizes The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Robert Kirkman has said that he isn’t fond of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 due to its storytelling and has made his dislike for it clear, without mincing words, in a recent interview.
On The Escape Pod, the showrunner, who admitted his distaste for publicly discussing his opinions on films, deemed it “terrible.” He added, “Still, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is dogs—.”
The Invincible showrunner singled out Jamie Foxx’s portrayal of Electro and Andrew Garfield’s performance as Spider-Man as two of the film’s positive aspects. He further stated that while both the sequel and its predecessor, 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, had “spectacular” elements, the sequel is “a mess.”
Numerous critics lambasted the film on its release, with many taking issue with its plot and tone.
In his review, ComicBookMovie‘s Josh Wilding likened the film to the widely panned Batman & Robin starring George Clooney and Chris O’Donnell. He wrote, “With appalling dialogue, slapstick humour, some bizarre aesthetics, and cheesy moments aplenty (Peter’s Spider-Man theme ringtone or Electro beating Spidey up to the tune of ‘Incy Wincy Spider’), this is the Batman & Robin of the Spider-Man franchise.”
The film reportedly made around $716.9 million globally at the box office. Despite being a financial success by general standards, planned sequels were scrapped. Following this, the company struck a deal with Disney and Marvel Studios to make future films about the webslinger. This resulted in a new iteration of Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is currently streaming on Disney+.
