Kevin Hart Teams up With Shawn Levy & Ryan Reynolds for New Netflix Spy Comedy

Kevin Hart is reportedly going to lead an untitled action comedy at Netflix, reuniting director McG with the genre that launched his feature career. The project assembles a producing team that includes Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps and Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort.

Kevin Hart to star in McG’s new action comedy

McG, who broke into features more than 25 years ago with Charlie’s Angels, will direct the project led by Kevin Hart, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The story follows two rival spies who unexpectedly encounter each other in a Lamaze class when their wives strike up a close friendship. Forced together by circumstance, the two operatives must navigate their colliding professional and personal lives as fatherhood approaches. Casting for the rival spy opposite Hart has yet to be revealed.

The screenplay is written by Adam and Aaron Nee, known for scripting The Lost City, alongside Jonathan Tropper. Tropper brings familiarity with the producing team, having previously written This Is Where I Leave You and contributed to The Adam Project. The script adapts from Sean Lewis’ short story.

On the production side, Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps is attached, with Dan Levine and Emily Morris producing for the banner responsible for Netflix’s Stranger Things. Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort is also producing, continuing a working relationship between Levy and Reynolds that spans multiple titles, including Free Guy, Deadpool & Wolverine, and The Adam Project. For this film, however, the pair is involved as producers rather than in their usual director-actor dynamic. Hart produces through his Hartbeat label, joined by Luke Kelly-Clyne and Bryan Smiley.

Overall, this is the latest addition to both the stars’ and the director’s connections with Netflix. Hart’s upcoming slate there includes The Roast of Kevin Hart, set for May 10, and the comedy 72 Hours, releasing on July 24. On the other hand, McG’s most recent features have landed on Netflix as well.
