Director Fernando Meirelles and screenwriter Christopher Hampton bring together an impressive ensemble for the comedy film Art, Deadline reports. Oscar nominee Colin Farrell, three-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes and recent Oscar nominee Wagner Moura will star in the project. Producer Patrick Wachsberger’s 193 launches sales at the upcoming Cannes market for the English-language adaptation.

French playwright Yasmina Reza wrote the original play, which first opened in Paris in 1994. The story follows three long-time friends whose bond fractures over a controversial art purchase.

Specifically, Serge buys a large, expensive, completely white painting featuring slightly less white lines. Marc finds the purchase appalling, and their friendship deteriorates over clashing views on modern art. Meanwhile, their mutual friend Yvan gets caught between both sides, making the situation worse.

Since then, the play has enjoyed productions on Broadway, in London’s West End and in Sydney, Australia. Most recently, a Broadway staging starred Bobby Cannavale, James Corden and Neil Patrick Harris in the central roles. Despite years of industry conversations about a film adaptation, the project is only now coming together with this team.

Charles Finch and Tracy Seaward serve as producers on the project. Multiple Oscar winner Christopher Hampton adapted the screenplay for the big screen. CAA Media Finance handles domestic representation for the film.

The project creates several notable reunions for Meirelles, who previously directed Fiennes in The Constant Gardener. Meirelles also collaborated with Farrell on the Apple series Sugar and produced multiple projects starring Moura. The Brazilian filmmaker currently remains in post-production on the Netflix film Here Comes the Flood. That project stars Robert Pattinson and Denzel Washington. Meirelles earned his own Oscar nomination for directing City of God and later helmed The Two Popes.
