Toy Story 5’s Tim Allen Reveals Why He Didn’t Like Tom Hanks When They First Met

Tim Allen and Tom Hanks star in the Toy Story franchise as Buzz and Woody, respectively, but Allen recently recalled a funny story on how he didn’t like Hanks when the pair first met.

Why did Tim Allen say he didn’t like Tom Hanks?

Speaking to Empire Magazine in a recent interview, both Allen and Hanks talked about their history together, and Allen recalled a hilarious story of why, when the pair first met, he didn’t like Hanks.

“When I met him,” said Allen, “well, I wasn’t all that thrilled with him. Because he ate French fries off my plate. I grew up around a lot of children and Tom did not. We did not ever share.”

Despite the funny introduction, Allen and Hanks eventually became fast friends, but Hanks noted that, around the time of Toy Story 2’s production, the pair realized they needed to put aside any differences if they wanted the franchise to succeed.

“We started to realise we were in the midst of something that was quite grandiose, and perhaps we needed a check on our hubris,” Hanks said. “So we started getting together. It’s good for the soul when Tim and I get together. And we cause some really good triple-takes when we’re out.”

The synopsis for Toy Story 5 reads, “The toys are back in Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5, and this time around it’s Toy meets Tech. Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs get exponentially harder when they go head to head with this all-new threat to playtime.”

The next installment will also feature the voices of Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, Joan Cusack as Jessie, Greta Lee as Lilypad, Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, and Tony Hale as Forky. Joining them are John Ratzenberger as Hamm, Wallace Shawn as Rex, Blake Clark as Slinky Dog, Jeff Bergman as Mr. Potato Head, Anna Vocino as Mrs. Potato Head, Annie Potts as Bo Peep, Bonnie Hunt as Dolly, Melissa Villaseñor as Karen Beverly, John Hopkins as Mr. Pricklepants, Kristen Schaal as Trixie, Ernie Hudson as Combat Carl, Keanu Reeves as Duke Caboom, Craig Robinson as Atlas, Shelby Rabara as Snappy, Scarlett Spears as Bonnie, Mykal-Michelle Harris as Blaze, and Matty Matheson as Dr. Nutcase.

Toy Story 5 hits theaters on June 19, 2026. Although there are rumors that more movies are in the works, at this time, there’s been no confirmation or announcement from Disney or Pixar regarding any additional Toy Story movies; that being said, Pixar filmmaker and CCO Pete Doctor recently said the company plans on releasing one original film followed by one sequel in the years to come.
