Directed by Mikey Alfred and written by Rusty Johnson, the film was released on March 26, 2021. Its story follows Michael, a recent high school graduate, trying to determine his future while pursuing his goal of becoming a professional skateboarder. While his friends move ahead with clear plans, he remains undecided about his path. His father, Oliver, pushes him toward a more stable path, either through higher education or by joining a construction business.
As he weighs his options, Michael begins forming connections with professional skateboarders in an effort to build his own path. However, these choices create strain in his relationships and force him to balance personal ambition with family expectations.
The film’s cast includes Ryder McLaughlin as Michael, Vince Vaughn as Oliver, Miranda Cosgrove as Rachel, Nico Hiraga as Jay, Aramis Hudson as Adolf, and Angus Cloud as Walker. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a critics’ score of 78 percent based on 18 reviews. John Serba of Decider wrote in his review, “North Hollywood is an unassuming charmer, a lightweight but surprisingly deep little character study.” The critic also praised McLaughlin’s performance, writing, “McLaughlin holds the movie together with a strong lead performance that finds exactly what makes his character endearing and, at times, infuriating.”
