How Robert Downey Jr.’s Dreams Helped Him Prep for Avengers: Doomsday Role
In the build-up to his much-awaited return to the MCU, Robert Downey Jr. seems to have adopted a unique acting technique to help himself get into the skin of Doctor Doom for Avengers: Doomsday. The Academy Award winner explained in a recent interview how Vanessa Kirby, who plays Sue Storm in the film, helped him channel his dreams to get a better grasp of the Marvel supervillain.
Robert Downey Jr. says he did ‘dream work’ to prepare for Avengers: Doomsday
During a recent conversation, the 61-year-old actor revealed that he indulged in “dream work” while working on the character of Victor Von Doom upon the suggestion of Vanessa Kirby.
Robert Downey Jr. noted on Bran Ferren’s Conversations for Our Daughters series, “Going back into doing this next Avengers: Doomsday film, where I’ll be playing Victor von Doom – now a brand new take on my involvement, having been the first lead in a reiteration of Marvel, creating the MCU – and my co-star Vanessa Kirby was like, ‘Hey, would you want to do some dream work?’ And I was like, ‘You know what? It’s been a while.’ And I did that one-on-one. This would be more of a group thing. I go, ‘Yeah, I want that community.'”
Notably, dream work is a strategy championed by late acting coach Sandra Seacat. It requires an actor to assess their dreams while preparing for a particular role.
Explaining the technique, Downey Jr. further added, “Well, if we’re smarter in groups, then it stands to reason we’re probably deeper in groups. If you want to get together and do dream journaling and have things that seem completely unrelated wind up going, ‘No, no, no, your subconscious is giving you something,’ and if it’s correctly interpreted, it can help your own evolution, and naturally the product will benefit…I’m not quite sure what it’s going to be. It’s a new facilitator, but I know the people that she learned from, the Sandra Seacats and all that stuff of the world, and I’m just open.”
Notably, Avengers: Doomsday will mark the return of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans to the MCU. It is currently on track to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
