Barry Keoghan recently dissected his retreat from social media amidst rumors of cheating. The Saltburn star, who is soon set to star as Ringo Starr in the anticipated Beatles biopic, spoke about the time he became a target of hatred because fans believed he cheated on Sabrina Carpenter with influencer Breckie Hill.

Barry Keoghan, one of the most acclaimed actors of this generation, recently shed light on his decision to quit social media platforms and retreat from the public eye after rumors about him cheating on Sabrina Carpenter went rampant across the internet. Keoghan denied the rumors at the time the allegations came up.

The Bird star appeared on Benny Blanco’s Friends Keep Secrets podcast for its April 28 episode, where he discussed the narrative against him.

“I have been avoiding stuff. I have been like, you know, I came off Instagram, you know, on social profiles. I’ve stopped going to events. I’ve stopped, you know, just uh socializing. And again, it’s because, you know, there was a narrative out there that was never really…sort of even spoken on, a narrative that’s not true,” Keoghan said, referring to the infamous claim of cheating. “And, you know, I just disappeared. I feel compelled to.”

Stating that he had never even confirmed that these were true, and recalling how influencer Breckie Hill later admitted that the claims were fabricated, Keoghan added, “Unfortunately, having a relationship in the public eye, we all know this from our own stories, but it gets put out there, and it’s like … yeah, amplified.”

The 33-year-old said that the reaction he received was absolutely “disgusting” and “vile.” The actor also said that his silence at the time cost him his mental health. “I’m not asking people to become my fan. I’m asking for people to stop assuming, and also stop jumping on this narrative and attacking me, and dragging me down in any way you can.”

Sabrina Carpenter, meanwhile, has never addressed these cheating rumors.
