Sony’s AI Horror Movie With DC Actor To Leave Netflix & Stream on Hulu

The 2024 AI-centric horror movie Afraid, starring John Co and DC actor David Dastmalchian, is leaving Netflix and moving to Hulu in a few weeks. Written, co-produced, and directed by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Chris Weitz, the movie centers around a family’s terrifying experience with their new AI digital assistant.

AfrAId is leaving Netflix in May

Netflix will drop Afraid (stylized as AfrAId) from its content library on Thursday, May 28, 2026. Subsequently, the movie will stream on Hulu later on the same day. Among several other Hollywood stars, the film features David Dastmalchian, who recently played Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad, in its cast.

Chris Weitz wrote and directed the movie. He is known for writing screenplays for popular movies such as The Golden Compass, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Creator, and About a Boy.

Afraid centers on Curtis and Meredith, an ordinary couple with three kids. After his boss tells him about a new AI named AIA, Curtis reluctantly installs the digital voice assistant in his house. At first, AIA analyzes the family’s routine and helps them improve their lifestyle. However, as it becomes more integrated in their lives, AIA begins to behave strangely, leading to disturbing incidents.

The film’s cast includes John Cho as Curtis, Katherine Waterston as Meredith, Lukita Maxwell as Iris, Ashley Romans as Sam, David Dastmalchian as Lightning, and Wyatt Lindner as Preston, among others. Havana Rose Liu lent her voice to the AI assistant AIA.

Jason Blum co-produced the film through this production company, Blumhouse Productions, in partnership with Columbia Pictures and Depth of Field. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Releasing distributed the movie worldwide.

Released on August 30, 2024, the movie received generally poor reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently has a 25% Tomatometer score and a 50% Popcornmeter score. Metacritic reports a similar rating, with a critic score of 28 and a user score of 4.2.

At the global box office, Afraid made just under $13 million against a $12 million budget.
