Matthew Lillard Says He’s Getting Work Due to ‘Weird Nostalgia’
Matthew Lillard has seen a recent resurgence in his career, but the actor does not believe that this return has been solely because of his talent. Instead, he believes that nostalgia is the key reason he is back in mainstream cinema. In a recent podcast appearance, the actor dissected why he thought he could make a return in the industry.
Matthew Lillard says he doesn’t think ‘anyone really likes’ him
Matthew Lillard, who is best known for his roles in the live-action Scooby-Doo films and the Scream franchise, has made a recent resurgence in the industry with works like Five Nights at Freddy’s and Daredevil: Born Again.
But the veteran actor believes that nostalgia is the reason he has been booking more roles lately. He spoke about this during his appearance on the Phase Hero podcast.
“Scooby-Doo one and two are more popular now than they ever were when they came out. So I do think there’s a weird nostalgia thing happening in our industry and in the zeitgeist because I think that people are longing for ye olde times,” the 56-year-old actor explained, “I think that’s one of the reasons I’m having this moment to be honest, is because I was identified in that moment, so people are hiring me again.”
“I think that’s why I’m working. I don’t think anyone really likes me. They just miss the old times,” Lillard continued with a laugh, “Who should we get? Who’s old and relatively warm and fuzzy feeling? Let’s get Matthew Lillard. Talented? No. But do we like him? Yes.”
Over the past years, Lillard also returned to prominent television roles, including Cross and Daredevil: Born Again. This comes after Quentin Tarantino’s viral comments criticizing the actor.
Lillard later explained that Tarantino’s comment and the general reaction to it made him feel more seen and appreciated by fans and fellow actors who came forward to defend him (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Matthew Lillard will soon be seen in Behemoth!
